To aid the teaching of these classic novels, Michael Clay Thompson outlines his method in the Parent Manual as first a short Preparation, with Reading as the main event, then Illustration, or looking back at the techniques highlighted. Finally there is Writing, which may include essays for older children.
For each of the titles he provides background comments, quotation quizzes, Socratic questions for discussion, and suggestions for writing assignments.
There is also a compilation of vocabulary that is common to all three books.
The Parent Manual works in conjunction with the language-illustrated novels in the Alice, Peter, and Mole trilogy.
