Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

And don't miss On the Come Up, Angie Thomas's powerful follow-up to The Hate U Give.

As a person who identifies as a white latino I found this book to be completely eye opening to my own prejudices and personal biases. I thought I had broken down all the barriers in my mind, and for the most part I have but while reading this I found myself understanding more of the person on the other side of the trigger. The author does an amazing job at describing the raw emotions felt by the characters and allows you to understand their thoughts on race, discrimination and even being an outsider. Our society is working well towards a progressive future, but I would love to see this novel as a required reading in middle school/high school to open up the conversation in all schools and hopefully break down even more barriers. I really appreciate this book and wish it would have been around when I was an adolescent.

This book gives so much hope for young teens as myself. I felt the same way Starr has but even worse. Scared to voice what’s right, due to the fear that I had inside. This has helped me in many ways to know that it’s ok to be heard. For awhile I thought whites were hating black people silently as well as loudly. The adventure with reading this life changing book has made me understand that all whites are not the same. Yes some still can’t stand my race, but I’m beginning to know how to be comfortable in my own skin. I hope you guys read this book for more knowledge and understanding, rather than just watching the movie. 🥰🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
